Check Federal Prison Releases

To find someone released from Federal Bureau of Prisons institutions after a matter connected with Le Sueur County, start by confirming that federal custody actually existed. No BOP institution was identified within Le Sueur County. The federal page is a national receiving and release route, not a local jail page. The BOP Inmate Locator can show a release date or that a person is no longer in BOP custody. Those labels do not prove unrestricted return to the community. Federal supervision, U.S. Marshals custody, immigration detention, or state and local custody may follow, so the federal judgment and any receiving system must also be checked.

Federal Prison Release Paths

A federal defendant may move through several custodians. U.S. Marshals often manage federal pretrial detention, including placement in contracted facilities. After sentencing and designation, the person may enter a BOP institution. A later BOP release may lead to federal supervision, another sovereign's custody, immigration processing, or the community. The federal record must be read in that sequence.

The Le Sueur County roster does not track a person after a true federal transfer. If the local jail entry identifies U.S. Marshals or another federal recipient, that transfer entry confirms the first movement. It is not a BOP release. Likewise, a serious county charge does not put a person into the federal system without a federal case or receiving agency.

No federal prison is identified in Le Sueur County. BOP institutions form a national system used only when a person actually entered federal prison custody.

Federal BOP Release Search

The official BOP Inmate Locator covers federal inmates incarcerated from 1982 to the present. Search by BOP Register Number, DCDC number, FBI number, or INS number. A name search also permits optional age, race, and sex filters. Use identifying details to avoid a same-name match.

Locator fieldUse
Name and register numberIdentify the federal record and retain the stable BOP number.
Age, race, and sexCompare identifying fields when several name results appear.
Release dateRead the date shown by BOP, while allowing for later recalculation.
Location or ReleasedDistinguish a named BOP institution from a record no longer in BOP custody.

A result labeled Released or Not in BOP Custody means the person is not then held by BOP. It does not rule out U.S. Probation, U.S. Marshals, ICE, Minnesota DOC, a county jail, or another status. BOP also notes that dates may be recalculated, including due to federal time credits. Treat the displayed date as an agency field, then use the court and receiving record to explain what followed.

The locator's status helps establish the end of BOP custody, but it does not identify every later legal restraint.

Confirm a Federal Prison Release

Start with the last verified custodian and work forward. A county roster absence is too weak to establish a federal release, and the BOP database may be the wrong system during pretrial detention.

  1. Obtain the federal identifier or exact biographical data. If Le Sueur County transferred the person, request the public receiving-agency entry from Sheriff Records.
  2. Search the BOP Locator by identifier first. If using a name, compare age and other displayed identity fields.
  3. Read the location and release-date fields. A named institution indicates BOP placement; “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” establishes only the BOP status.
  4. Check the federal court judgment and docket for sentence, release conditions, later orders, and the role of U.S. Probation.
  5. If another custodian is named or plausible, use that agency's official locator. Do not stop at the BOP label.

A good two-source pair is a BOP released result plus the federal court judgment or supervision order. For a local-to-federal transfer, pair the Le Sueur transfer entry with the federal custody source. This approach preserves the difference between leaving the county jail, entering federal detention, leaving BOP, and ending all federal sentence obligations.

The county-side verification chain is covered in the Le Sueur County released-inmate search. That route can establish whether the local booking ended in a federal transfer.

Federal Pretrial Custody Gaps

The U.S. Marshals Service manages many federal pretrial prisoners through contracted facilities and moves sentenced prisoners toward BOP designation. Its prisoner operations information explains the custody role, but it does not provide a public historical name locator comparable to BOP.

A person may therefore be in federal custody and not yet appear as a designated BOP prisoner. Use the federal detention or release order, court contacts, counsel, and the known custodial agency. After designation, BOP becomes the better public prison locator. A gap between Le Sueur County departure and BOP appearance should not be called release unless an official source says release occurred.

Designation
The federal process of assigning a sentenced person to a BOP institution.
Pretrial detention
Custody before final judgment, often managed through the U.S. Marshals Service.
Federal release
Departure from BOP or federal detention under the applicable order or sentence.
Supervision
Court-ordered federal community oversight that may continue after prison custody ends.

Note: Lack of a BOP record during a verified federal transfer can reflect the custodial stage, not return to the community.

Federal Prison Release Records

The BOP locator supplies public summary fields, while the federal docket supplies the judgment and later orders. BOP's FOIA and records information is the agency route for records not available through the locator. A focused request should identify the person by full name and register number, describe the custody or release field sought, and give a useful date range.

Do not send a BOP request for a purely local Le Sueur County booking. Sheriff Records is the source for the county jail release or transfer entry. BOP becomes relevant after proof of federal prison custody. For a federal pretrial matter, the court or U.S. Marshals route may be more direct than BOP.

Records can also clarify whether a displayed release date was changed. Ask for the specific public release or sentence-computation record rather than all information about a person. Narrow identifiers reduce ambiguity and help distinguish people with similar names.

BOP Released Status Limits

“Not in BOP custody” is a negative statement about one agency. It is not a general freedom status. The person may be under U.S. Probation supervision after prison, held by the U.S. Marshals on a different basis, transferred to ICE, returned to Minnesota custody, or held by another local authority. The displayed BOP release date cannot answer those separate questions.

Federal supervision records are distinct from county probation and Minnesota DOC supervised release. Use the federal case to identify the terms and responsible federal office. The Le Sueur County District Court route applies to the local case, not the federal judgment. A Minnesota state sentence or Le Sueur County probation matter should not be inferred from a federal result.

Federal Release to ICE

A BOP release can be followed by civil immigration custody. If the federal record, court context, or receiving entry supports an ICE transfer, use the official ICE Online Detainee Locator. That handoff remains custody, even though the BOP locator may say the person is released or not in BOP custody.

An ICE non-result does not prove community release. Exact-name matching, A-number use, country of birth, timing, coverage limits, and later transfer can affect the search. The immigration system is separate from criminal BOP custody and must be described as a different legal and record path.

No ICE detention facility or county ICE contract was verified in Le Sueur County. This route is conditional and should be used only when the individual record points toward immigration custody.

No Le Sueur BOP Facility

No federal correctional institution was identified within Le Sueur County. A national database can serve residents and cases without representing a local building. As a result, there is no honest Le Sueur County BOP street address, release gate, local visitation schedule, or release-hours claim to provide.

Use the institution named in the current BOP record for facility-specific contact and logistics. If the record says released, use the federal case and any documented receiving authority. If the person was only in Le Sueur County Jail, use county records unless the jail entry shows a federal transfer.

A historical name search is also bounded by the locator's stated coverage of federal inmates incarcerated from 1982 forward. For an older matter, or for a record detail the locator does not display, use BOP's records process and the federal court file. Keep the BOP register number with the request when it is known. That identifier is more reliable than assuming two people with the same name share one custody history.

This system boundary keeps local release facts with the Sheriff's Office and federal prison facts with BOP. It also prevents a county roster change from being turned into an unsupported federal custody claim.
